What a find . Looking for food and a drink on a Tuesday night. Didn’t know this pub . Had simple bar food . The burger was the best I’ve had in years. Beer was good two. Will be going back . Thanks Mark and kitchen.
It’s Friday, the sun is shining, having worked throughout all the Covid pandemic thought we needed a bit of R&R. Outside hospitality now available so why not? So for the 1st time since last August decided to brave a pub. Great welcome by Mark and his team, track and trace in operation. Garden tables nicely spaced. Easy table ordering, fast and safe delivery of drinks. And dont forget the pizza!! Lovely afternoon, good food, a couple of drinks, socially distanced banter with other customers, what’s not to like?? Go on, you know you want to!
Mark has done a great service to the community by keeping the Chequers going through this difficult year. It was an inspired choice to find an Italian chef, Carmello, and launch post lockdown with a range of great pizzas. A full Italian menu is apparently coming. This evening we had our first takeaway of three pizzas which were simple to order online.
All three had delicious thin crusts which you had to eat all the way to the edge, it was that good. The tomato marinara was excellent. We had the Siciliana, the Neapoletana and the Buffala with onions and capers and the toppings were perfectly cooked on all of them, no mean feat.
We are definitely going back and can’t wait for the restaurant is fully open.
Now with a new pizza (Italian style) experience, good value at around £10 for a great pizza. At the moment served in the garden, great on a summer’s day, paid for via new app, so no need to leave your seat. Marquee Available if weather not so great. Give it a try…
What I like is that Mark has respected the pub’s history and kept the essence of what the pub is but at the same time is making changes needed to move it forward and get it back on track. That is very comforting as a local who has used the pub for the past 25 years.
“Mark Chater is just the very best host and now he is at ‘The Chequers’ we can’t stay away from the place. The pub always had that 17th-century ships timbered building charm, but with the Chaters in charge in now has a soul to it which makes everyone feel at ease and welcome”

My wife and I have been going to The Chequers for 20 years, and we have to say that Mark and his new team are doing a great job to bring the pub and its food back to the glory days.
The pub is full of charm, but Mark and Sue are making it feel like a homely experience with excellent traditional pub fayre but with a bit of flare.

Great to have Mark and Sue in charge at ‘The Chequers’ a great village pub that had lost its way under the last landlord. Mark & Sue will get it back on track, and from a couple of visits, we have made since it changed hands it seems you can already see and feel it is going in the right direction.
